The latest health food product that is set to hit the UK is chia seeds, which are said to be a dream for those considering dieting as they aid weight loss by making the stomach feel more full when they expand after mixing with liquids.
Chia seeds are already popular in the United States, and are loaded with omega-3 essential fatty acids, minerals, proteins as well as antioxidants. The seeds may be sanctioned to be used within products in Britain, where they will join other wonderfoods such as acai berries, wheatgrass and goji berries. Currently chia seeds are sold here only as a bread additive, however the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods, a panel of experts that assists the Food Standards Agency, seems to be ready to give the seeds full approval. This may mean that chia seeds can be introduced to other baked goods and breakfast cereals.
Some people consider the seeds to be completely flavourless although some declare they possess a nutty fragrance, but the taste of these seeds is not extensively criticized. In fact chia seeds were widely cultivated by the ancient Aztecs in Mexico where the seeds were considered to be the food of the Gods.
